20 Steps to Installing a Deadbolt

Installing a Deadbolt

Place lock barrel through opening in edge of door so that lock protrudes out in locked position with the lock itself sticking out of the door.

Place the outside key portion into the opening on the outer side of the door so that the metal trigger slips through the cross-styled opening.

Place the inner lock switch on the inside of the door so that the trigger of the other half slips into the matching opening on the inside portion.

Place one screw in the outermost opening of the inside half so that the two screw openings are parallel to the ground.

Holding the outer half firmly, gently pull it out of the door until you can see about 1 to 2 cms between the lock and the door.

Make sure to maintain the connection between the two halves (the trigger and the opening for it).

Holding the outer half in place, use your other hand to push the screw through the door, using your leg to hold the door in place.

Connect the screw to the matching opening on the outer half by twisting the inner part of the outer half while pushing the screw gently until it clicks into place. (A flashlight might help but you have to hold it in your mouth or risk someone else getting involved.)

Quickly but calmly screw the screw with your hand a few times to lock it into the outer half.

Make sure you did not disconnect the trigger from the inner half when screwing the screw in with your hand.

Once connected, release your grasp of the outer half, and continuing screwing the screw into place.

Use a screwdriver to finish inserting the screw about 96-98% if the way in.

Insert the second screw into the other opening on the inside of the door by hand.

Using your fingers as a guide, maneuver the screw so that it catches into the opposing opening of the outer half.

Finish screwing both screws firmly in place.

Test the lock to make sure it opens and closes inside the doorway opening for the lock.

Once aligned, place the doorway fixture in place and test that the lock works with the fixture placed inside.

Once that is aligned, gently open the door so the fixture stays in place and screw it into place with a 2-5” screw, depending on the level of security you need. (The longer the screw, the more secure the lock when door is locked.)

Finish placing the fixture with another screw after testing the lock again in the doorway.

voila! You have just installed a deadbolt lock into a door.
